I’m a crazy cat lady (six cats currently!), but I also like dogs. And in fact, I have a dog. Her name is Leah, and she’ll be six years old on May 15th (is it weird that my dog shares a birthday with my ex?). I got her when she was just five months old, and one of the first orders of business was crate-training. Housebreaking goes along with that, and within a month we could trust her in the carpeted areas of our house. With the exception of anxiety-induced bladder issues, Leah can be trusted to have the run of the house without having any accidents. She knows to hold it until we let her outside (first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and a few times throughout the day), and she also knows that on rainy or super-cold or snowy days, or if we’re going to be gone for an extended period of time (more than four hours), she should use the pad we put down for her in the kitchen.
I know that disposable dog pads are all the rage, but when I got Leah my son was in cloth diapers (and our daughter had just graduated to underwear a year before), so it made sense to choose cloth dog pads. You care for them the same way you do cloth diapers – which for us means washing on hot with other pure white items (socks, underwear, washcloths) and an extra splash of bleach. In the five and a half years we’ve had Leah, we have been using the same three washable pads for her. It was only this past September, when Whisker Creations sent us a Washable Dog Pee Pee Pad to review, that we added a fourth one to our collection.
Whisker Creations carries an assortment of handmade items for dogs, including clothes, harnesses, diapers, and of course washable pads. Their pads are vinyl-backed, which means you don’t have to worry about soilage leaking through. A piece of felt in the middle of the pad ensures optimal absorption, and the cute colorful pattern is a nice change from the standard hospital shade of blue you find with most washable dog pads. Leah uses the pad readily, and it washes and dries nicely, and after several months of being used at least once a month it still looks and feels brand new. (Also? These pads are handy for car trips with anxious pets; they’re also useful if you have a sick child you’d like to protect your furniture or carpeting from!). While the smaller size (17″ x 24″) might not be quite enough for a larger dog, for smaller dogs it’ll do just fine.
